WHO WE WORK WITH

KHANA’s target groups are people who face particular vulnerability to HIV in Cambodia as well as people who are already affected by the epidemic. There has recently been a reduction in HIV prevalence in the adult population from an estimated peak of 2% in 1998 to 0.9% in 2007. At this stage of the epidemic it is very important to prevent a second-wave of infections by responding to evolving vulnerabilities. This is reflected in KHANA’s focused prevention work with sex workers and entertainment workers, drug users and men who have sex with men. In the light of the increasing feminization of the epidemic and the large proportion of new infections among married women KHANA also works with married couples, factory workers and migrants. KHANA’s care, support and impact mitigation work targets people living with HIV and their families, including orphans and vulnerable children.

KHANA builds the capacity of marginalized groups such as people living with HIV, sex workers and men who have sex with men. By reaching out to these vulnerable populations and engaging them in workshops, retreats, and self-help groups we have significantly increased their knowledge of HIV/AIDS issues, treatments and services. This work continues to produce tangible results. With greater self-esteem, peers have come together to demand rights to health services such as VCCT and to advocate against day-to-day stigma and discrimination. People living with HIV have come together in self-help groups to provide mutual support.
